Using the Writing Process
to Write Paragraphs (coming soon)
The following paragraphs were written by students as part of a unit on using the writing process. The students began by listing ideas in their Writer's Notebooks of what they might like to write about. Each student then developed several possible topic sentences, and completed a brainstorming web. The students held peer conferences to eliminate details from their webs that did not support their topic sentences, and to better explain their thinking through the use of elaboration. Following several lessons on organization, the students numbered their ideas and consulted a list of possible transition words. After writing their first drafts, the students used several tools on the computer, as well as a rubric and a checklist, to help them revise and edit their own work. The samples below are what the students turned in as their completed drafts, though many are continuing to use the writing process to make their work even better (since no draft ever has to be final).
